Tissues

A group of cells with similar structure, organised to do a common function is called tissue.

A) Plant tissues: On the basis of the dividing capacity,  plant tissues are basically of two types:

  • Meristematic
  • Permanent
Meristematic: consists of actively-dividing cells. On the basis of region of plant where it is present: meristems are of three types
  1. Apical Meristem: Apical meristems are present on the growing tips of stems/roots to increase the length  of plant
  2. Intercalary Meristem: present on the base of leaves or internodes
  3. Lateral Meristem: Present on the lateral sides of roots and stems to increase the thickness
Permanent: Fromed from meristematic tissues, the cells in the tissue loose the ability to divide. Permanent plant tissues are of two types:
  1. Simple: are made up of one type of cells
    1. Parenchyma
    2. Collenchyma
    3. Sclerenchyma
  2. Complex: are made up of more than one type of cells
    1. Xylem
    2. Phloem

Animal tissues:
  • Epithelial
    • Squamous:
    • Cuboidal:
    • Columnar:
    • Ciliated:
  • Connective
    • Proper
    • Skeletal or supportive
    • Fluid or vascular
  • Muscular
    • Striated
    • Nonstriated/Smooth
    • Cardiac
  • Nervous
